The research suggests that the goal that governments had established in the Paris Agreement to limit the global temperature increase to 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels is not feasible. The world has already warmed by 1.1°C and is expected to exceed 1.5°C by the 2030s.
The report states that rapid cuts in fossil fuel use can help avoid the worst effects of climate change. The UN secretary-general, Antonio Guterres, responded to the findings by stating that all countries must present plans to eliminate the emission of fossil fuels within a decade. The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), which advises the UN on temperature increase, is responsible for the report. The new study aims to summarize various historical findings on the causes, impacts, and solutions to climate change that have been released since 2018.
