El Niño and La Niña can cause extreme weather conditions in different parts of the world, and have the potential to exacerbate natural disasters, which can result in severe damage to people, infrastructure, and the environment.

Sometimes it is not so easy to find realtime data about ENSO Indices, which show us if the planet is under the influence of El Niño, La Niña or in Neutral conditions.

El Niñometer is a tool that shows the updated status of the ENSO Index, as well as the current Alert System Status from NOAA.

With information about the current climate conditions and alerts from El Niñometer, you will know the time to relax, or if it’s time to take necessary precautionary measures for a potential rough time ahead in your area.

But remember, El Niño and La Niña are climate patterns that can amplify and increase the frequency of natural disasters in certain areas of the world, but they can also occur while in the Neutral phase.

How are these climate patterns related to Natural Disasters?

El Niño and La Niña are part of a weather pattern called the El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) cycle, which is a natural phenomenon that occurs every few years.

During El Niño, the Pacific Ocean becomes warmer than usual, while during La Niña, it becomes cooler than usual.

These changes in ocean temperatures can affect the weather patterns around the world, causing droughts, floods, hurricanes, and other natural disasters. For example, during El Niño, the warmer water can cause more rainfall in some areas, leading to flooding, while other areas may experience droughts.

Similarly, during La Niña, the cooler water can cause changes in wind patterns, which can result in more frequent hurricanes or tropical storms in certain parts of the world. These changes in weather patterns can have a cascading effect on different ecosystems, and increase the likelihood of natural disasters in various regions.

Due to heightened activity levels, adjustments will now be aligned with the weekly Niño 3.4 values. This adjustment aims to provide data that more accurately reflect current climate conditions.

What the current status means:

La Niña conditions are present.

» Although temperatures are currently in the neutral phase, La Niña conditions are present and favored to persist through January–February 2026.

» A transition to Neutrality is likely during January–March 2026 (75% chance).
